Give it up might seem like a drastic measure when faced with the problem of over consumption. But, it was an idea that the RMIT Design Studies class (2006) jumped on with enthusiastic vigour and gave their best shot, and that really is all that it takes – enthusiasm and your best shot. To give up something simply means to stop doing it, not that hard when you consider that so many young Melbournians are complaining that they are surrounded by too much choice. So when you decide to give something up, keep in mind the bigger task at hand – to slow down the circulation of money and wildly excessive consumption – as well as seeing the benefits of your efforts in your own lifestyle, you will have the added advantage over all those other ‘greenies’ by actually doing something with real sustainable results.
Nothing is too small or trivial to renounce where the environment is concerned, and simple little changes are often the ones sustained for longer. There will be many visible benefits when you decide to give something up such as less throw away packaging, a healthier lifestyle, less money spent, more free time to dedicate to another good cause and the over all advantage of taking your input out of the supply chain. I’m sure you’ll also be able to come up with endless reasons of your own.
